South Island New Zealand
Our trips to New Zealand have been hugely enjoyable. The sense of space, light and unspoiled nature is - to me - like nowhere else I've visited. From the magnificence of the Southern Alps to the geothermal, sulphurous landscapes of the Tongariro Crossing, New Zealand has so much to offer. This page features images from South Island.

Teams of walkers set out over the ice of Fox Glacier - not something to be done unsupervised or by the inexperienced.
Fissures open up towards the end of the glacier, revealing deep blue ice below the surface.
The Devil's Punchbowl waterfall, near the top of Arthurs Pass, the route over the Southern Alps. Cascading behind the trees, it appeared to me almost as a Japanese water feature. Well worth visiting, it's only a short walk from the road.

Near Mount Cook, South Island; the grey water surges down carrying carries material from below the glacier.
Lake Marion, a hidden gem of an alpine lake, is well worth the hike up from the road near the divide, to the east of Milford Sound.
Other lakes are better known - as here, at Lake Wanaka.
Tennison Inlet, on Pelorus Sound, in the Marlborough Sounds northern part of South Island - a great place to sit and watch and listen to undisturbed nature.
